BMW X4 starting from $70K

New 'Sports Activity Coupe' due here from July, in four different variants
BMW will join a largely untapped niche in the local market with its X4 mid-sized luxury wagon – or 'Sports Activity Coupe' in Munich's parlance.
Styled with a low, curving roofline in the same paradigm as the X6, the X4 is based on the X3 SUV and will beat to market similar offerings from BMW's German prestige rivals, but has to snare buyers who have perhaps become entrenched fans of the Range Rover Evoque.
That task is made harder by the Evoque's highly competitive pricing, but the X4 will slot into a gap between the Evoque and the closest current German competitor – the Porsche Macan.
"The X4 will follow in the footsteps of the X6 which has enjoyed unprecedented success worldwide by fulfilling the requirements of customers who desire premium motoring with a point of difference – a sporty, coupé styled SAV," says Phil Horton, MD at BMW Australia.
"And following BMW's corporate direction, the X4 is packed with features and specifications, ensuring the vehicle offers outstanding customer value in addition to its extroverted styling and dynamic performance."
The entry-level variant in the range is the X4 xDrive20i, which is priced at $69,900 and is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine generating 135kW and 270Nm for a 0-100km/h time of 8.1 seconds. Fuel consumption, based on combined-cycle testing is 7.2L/100km, ruling out the green car dispensation for cars priced above the Luxury Car Tax threshold.
Moving up a peg is the X4 xDrive20d, priced from $73,400. Unlike the petrol 20i variant, this diesel model – also a 2.0-litre four-cylinder – is free of Luxury Car Tax since its fuel consumption figure of 5.2L/100km falls below the 7.0L/100km threshold for the green car dispensation. Power and torque figures of 140kW and 400Nm, respectively, mean the X4 will knock over the 0-100km/h sprint in 8.0 seconds, according to BMW.
Two six-cylinder variants – one diesel, one petrol – cap the X4 range. The X4 xDrive30d ($83,900) has a 3.0-litre diesel six under the bonnet, pumping out 190 kW and 560 Nm for a 0-100km/h time of 5.8 seconds. Fuel consumption measures 5.9L/100km.
BMW's TwinPower 3.0-litre petrol six resides in the engine bay of the X4 xDrive35i ($87,900) and produces 225kW and 400Nm. Acceleration to 100km/h from a standing start takes 5.5 seconds and the fuel consumption figure is 8.3L/100km.
All variants are equipped as standard with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, with shift paddles on the steering wheel. The north/south drivetrain (with longitudinally-mounted inline engines) delivers torque to all four wheels through the xDrive system.
Standard features across the range comprise 19-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, electrically adjustable seats with leather trim and position memory for the driver, bi-xenon headlights, Bluetooth/USB connectivity with audio streaming, satellite navigation, active cruise control, front/rear parking sensors, reversing camera and powered tailgate.
The six-cylinder models are trimmed to a higher level, naturally. Additional features for the xDrive30d include Surround View, anti-dazzle/fold-in exterior mirrors, nine-speaker HiFi audio system and Dynamic Damper Control.
As the flagship, the xDrive35i rides on 20-inch alloys and features a standard M Sport package. Additionally, the top-spec X4 gains a 16-speaker Harman/kardon audio system and keyless entry.
Packaging highlights of the X4 include a triple-split folding rear seat and a luggage capacity of 500 litres (with rear seat raised). Front and rear seats are mounted up to 28mm lower than in the X3 donor, but the roofline has been chopped 36mm.
BMW Australia has advised motoring.com.au that the X4 will go on sale here during July.
