BMW X5 pricing announced

Fourth-generation SUV arrives in Australia next month, initially with diesel power only

BMW Australia has released local pricing for the first two variants of the all-new BMW X5 range.

From launch, the only models available will be the BMW X5 xDrive30d ($112,900) and the X5 M50d ($149,900) – both diesels with all-wheel drive. According to BMW Australia, the six-cylinder X5 xDrive30d is the most popular choice in the X5 range.

Powering the BMW X5 xDrive30d is a 3.0-litre common-rail diesel six-cylinder with variable-geometry turbocharger. The engine drives through an eight-speed automatic and produces 195kW and 620Nm for a 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds.

Also powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine – but with four turbochargers – the BMW X5 M50d generates 294kW and 760Nm for a 5.2-second 0-100km/h time. The engine is coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, but one calibrated for the high-performance application. An M Sport Differential at the rear axle provides optimal traction and cornering. Adaptive M Suspension Professional includes anti-roll stabilisation and Integral Active Steering, which permits rear-wheel steering.

An X5 M high-performance model is understood to be on BMW Australia's wishlist, but there is no word yet as to when we might see it here.

Reflecting the fourth-generation model's all-new status, the in-house development number is G05, and the X5 is now built on the same modular 'CLAR' platform that will also underpin the BMW X7 – a seven-seat SUV that will go toe to toe with the Mercedes GLS.

Larger in every dimension, and now just over 4.9 metres long, the new X5 will accommodate up to 645 litres of luggage without lowering the rear seats. The wheelbase has also been extended 42mm for improved rear-seat accommodation.

Laser headlights and 3D tail lights will provide a distinctive point of difference from the competition. The laser headlights are standard for the BMW X5 M50d.

Buyers will be able to choose from a selection of wheel designs up to 22 inches in diameter, and BMW is offering comprehensive suspension options, complemented by an xOffroad package. That pack features aluminium underbody protection elements and two-axle air suspension system with an electronically-controlled rear differential lock.

In addition, the xOffroad package comes with an ‘off-road’ rocker switch in the centre console. This allows the driver to cycle rapidly through four different off-road driving modes to suit sand, rocks, gravel and snow. The optional two-axle air suspension system provides five different ride settings through 80mm of travel, with the default mode between the high and low settings.

On board, the new BMW X5 will feature version 7.0 of BMW's operating system and BMW Live Cockpit Professional. The latter incorporates two 12.3-inch digital screens – one for the instruments and a touch screen for the infotainment systems. As well as the touch screen, Live Cockpit Professional can be operated through BMW's iDrive single-point controller, voice recognition and gesture control.

A panoramic sunroof is a standard big-ticket item for both levels of trim. BMW claims that the glass area is 30 per cent larger than the previous model's. As an option, BMW also offers the X5 with the 'sky lounge', which is powered by 15,000 LEDs mounted in the headlining. Also standard, and trimmed in ‘Vernasca’ leather, the front sports seats are electrically adjustable and the adjustments can be stored in position memory.

Standard features for the BMW X5 xDrive30d include:
• Adaptive LED headlights with high beam assist,
