BMW Z4 range goes all-turbo

Entry-level sDrive23i gets the flick as two new TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine variants join the Z4 range

BMW has shuffled its Z4 Roadster line-up with the introduction of two new TwinPower Turbo engine variants.

Available in two outputs, 135 and 180kW, the turbocharged N20 four-cylinder unit fitted to Z4 delivers more power and torque than the respective six-cylinder mills each engine replaces. Both variants utilise twin-scroll turbocharging technology, variable valve timing and direct injection to achieve reduced CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy.

Representing a new entry-level market position for the Z4 Roadster in Australia, the Z4 sDrive20i is priced from $76,900. The model -- which replaces the Z4 sDrive23i -- outputs 135kW/270Nm (up 20Nm) while returning a combined fuel consumption figure of just 6.7L/100km (down 1.8L/100km).

Thanks to its frugal new engine, the entry-spec Z4 also manages to side step most of the luxury car tax threshold that would have been incurred otherwise.

The second newcomer, and the mid-spec model in BMW’s Roadster line-up, is the Z4 sDrive28i. Spearheading the new four-cylinder turbo range this variant delivers 180kW/350Nm over its naturally aspirated predecessor, the Z4 sDrive30i.

The new Z4 sDrive28i is also 0.1 seconds quicker than the outgoing model, accelerating from 0-100km/h in just 5.7 seconds. Fuel consumption is trimmed by 21 per cent to 6.7L/100km, which sees the new model fit easily below the federal government’s fuel efficient luxury car tax threshold.

As a consequence, BMW has been able to significantly improve the customer value offered by the Z4 sDrive28i. Priced from $89,400 (MRLP) the new model is $9300 cheaper than the model it replaces.

Both the Z4 sDrive20i and Z4 sDrive28i are available as standard with a six-speed manual transmission or optionally with an eight-speed automatic.

The BMW Roadster range is still topped by the Z4 sDrive35i and flagship Z4 sDrive35is, which now retail from $107,500 and $120,500 respectively.

The new BMW Z4 sDrive20i and Z4 sDrive28i are available in Australian showrooms now, whilst revised prices for the Z4 sDrive35i and Z4 sDrive35is are effective immediately.
