BMW's hybrid supercar bound for Australia

Wait-list started for production version of space-age concept

Finally, a new-age supercar that will make the boat trip Down Under.

Australia will secure a limited number of BMW’s first hybrid-powered supercar, the Munich maker has confirmed. However, we will have to wait until late 2014, almost a year after it goes on sale in left-hand-drive markets. Buoyed by customer response to the concept car at the Melbourne motor show, local BMW boss Phil Horton confirmed to Motoring.com.au that Australia is on the list of countries to sell the vehicle, albeit in limited numbers.

He said the company had received serious expressions of interest from Australian customers but dealers were yet to take deposits because “we don’t know how much it will cost yet”.

“The truth is no-one knows [how much it will cost],” he said.

When asked if the car would appeal to buyers of performance cars or luxury cars, he said: “Performance-oriented customers with lots of money.”

Australia would likely get as few as five to 10 cars, he said. Price is speculated to be in excess of $200,000.
