FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW: Borgward gives glimpse of new sports car

Revived Chinese-German marque teases new halo model that taps into car-maker's illustrious heritage

Borgward has released its second teaser image of the all-new sports car concept it will reveal on September 11 at the Frankfurt motor show.

Following on from the first tease of the sports car's bonnet, the latest rendering appears to show a futuristic take on a coupe, with an unusual aero-bridge that looks to have been lifted from a Ferrari 599.

Nothing else has been revealed, but the dramatic design hints the company is ready to leave behind the conservative design language introduced by its current range of SUVs.

Likely to have been penned by former MINI design boss, Anders Warming, the new sports car could signpost the future direction for the entire brand.

Nothing else has been revealed about the new concept, but it's almost certain the new Borgward sports car will come powered with an updated version of the car-maker's pure-electric e-PROPULSION powertrain that combines two electric motors to produce 200kW/400Nm.

A powerful lithium-ion battery, meanwhile, will provide for a range of at least 500km.

It's thought the presence of a sports car in the Borgward range will help the car-maker play on its heritage within key markets like Germany.

In the mid-1950s, Borgward produced both the fast Hansa 1500 Sportcoupe and glamourous Isabella Coupe that won the respect of many car enthusiasts.

Borgward's engines also went onto to power Formula 2 engines.

Now based back in Bremen, where the car-maker originally started before going bankrupt, the reborn German brand has grand ambitions for its future.

Thanks to a healthy cash flow from Chinese auto-maker Foton Motor Company, Borgward has already announced that by 2020 it will manufacture more than 800,000 vehicles and an incredible 1.6 million cars by 2025.
