Borgward teases new SUV

Revived German car-maker teases SUV it hopes will help it sell 800,000 premium cars by 2020

Borgward has teased a single pic of its first car in 54 years ahead of its reveal at the Frankfurt motor show.

The new vehicle, confirmed to be an SUV, is thought to be a plug-in hybrid that’s been developed with Beiqi Foton Motor Company, China’s 18-year-old commercial vehicle giant.

Borgward became known as a technical pioneer developing direct fuel-injection and, Borgward claims, inventing the affordable sports sedan segment with its Isabella sedan, but went bankrupt back in 1961 and returned when industrialist Karlheinz Knöss teamed up with Christian Borgward, grandson of founder Carl Borgward.

According to Borgward junior, the revived German car-maker now has more than 1000 employees at its Stuttgart headquarters, as it gears up to sell more than 800,000 “accessible premium” cars a year by 2020, beginning with the new SUV that it will show at the Frankfurt motor show.

If that sounds ambitious, phase two of Borgward’s growth plans involve selling 1.6 million cars by 2025.

The new SUV, which is said to be production-ready when it's revealed in Frankfurt, will be available as both a petrol and diesel plug-in hybrid but, as yet, it’s unknown where it has been developed, nor where it will be built.

More information, as well as more teases of the new SUV, are expected ahead of its reveal.
