Porsche's entry-level Boxster celebrated an important milstone last week. Introduce ten years ago, production of the mid-engined two-seater sportscar has officiallt topped the 200,000 mark.
Porsche Cars Australia Managing Director, Michael Winkler, said the success of the Boxster can not be overestimated.
“Ten years ago no one would have believed what a huge success this Porsche roadster would become. Today the Boxster is an icon,” he said.
For 2007 both the Boxster and Boxster S models (just announced) receive engine upgrades in line with the recently-introduced Boxster-based Cayman coupe.
The entry-level Boxster, priced from $108,800, now features VarioCam Plus variable valve timing to bring its power output to 180kW – up 4kW. Torque is up marginally – 3Nm to 273.
Porsche claims fuel consumption is also reduced by 0.3lt/100km to 9.3lt/100.
The engine in the Boxster S gets a capacity increase from 3.2 to 3.4-litres and an extra 11kW and 20Nm –to 217kw/340Nm.
No fuel consumption benefits are noted but the extra oomph is enough, says the German marque, to drop the $134,600 soft-top’s 0-100km/h time to 5.4sec.
