For over $5 (UK£2.40) a litre, BP's Ultimate 102 Octane fuel will be available to owners of high performance road cars in the UK. The current price of petrol in the UK has been hovering around £1 per litre for months.
The 102 octane unleaded fuel is manufactured in small quantities at BP's Speciality Fuels Technology Centre and was released in six outlets in south-east UK late April.
BP claims that Ultimate 102 is also cleaner than other forms of petrol, due to superior evaporation properties, a "sulphur-free" formula and a benzene element of less than 0.1 per cent.
"Fuels of this type have not been readily available to the public previously, but now we have introduced BP Ultimate 102 unleaded specifically for private motorsport enthusiasts based on our product technology in this field," says Paul Beckwith, Vice President of Fuels Product Management.
"This fuel has a range of features to allow increased performance from the most highly tuned engines, alongside all of the benefits that drivers expect from BP Ultimate fuels."
Used in Formula One racing and by various teams in the World Rally Championship, BP expects weekend racers and privateer motorsport teams will take up the 102 octane fuel.
At this stage the only supplier of 102 Octane fuel in Australia is Elf, as used in the Australian Rally Championship.
