Brabus tunes a bangin' Benz E-Class wagon

High-end German aftermarket tuning company Brabus is known for pushing the edge of the envelope and its latest efforts with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon are true to form.

To say the range of available modifications is extensive certainly understates the Brabus case. Kits for the E-Class wagon cover petrol and diesel engines, exhausts, cosmetics and suspension work.

A case in point is the E 43, where total power outputs of the twin turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 can be lifted from the stock 295kW/520Nm to 331kW/570Nm via the Brabus PowerXtra B30-450 performance upgrade. This makes the already-quick E 43 E-Class wagon even quicker: standstill to 100km/h in just 4.4 seconds.

While that’s the top end, Brabus also covers E-Class wagon models from the base four-cylinder E 200, which normally outputs 135kW/300Nm but, with the help of the Brabus PowerXtra B20 tuning kit, bumps those figures to 165kW/330Nm.

Then there’s the PowerXtra B25 performance kit which lifts power of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder E 250 from 155kW/350Nm to 180kW/400Nm, helping to dispose of the zero to 100km/h sprint in an even 7.0 seconds.

Diesels are factored in too: The four-cylinder E 220 d, via the Brabus PowerXtra D3 plug-and-play module, pumps out an extra 20kW/50Nm, while the E 350 d employs the Brabus PowerXtra D6 S tuning kit to lift power and torque by 37kW and 100Nm respectively to produce a total 227kW/720Nm. This enables the 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel to slingshot from zero to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds.

The company can assist making your Mercedes-Benz sound special too: Stainless steel quad exhausts are offered with the option of a more authoritative exhaust note which, on E43 variants, can be selected by the driver via a steering wheel button.

And, for Brabus, it’s not merely all about go.

There’s a range of tailor-made Brabus alloy wheels ranging in size from 18 to 21 inches, plus various suspension modifications, from lowered springs to a factory-fitted control module for air-suspension E-Class wagons.

The company also manufactures custom bodywork including wind tunnel-tested high-grade polyurethane aero enhancements, and offers an “almost endless” range of dress-up interiors using high-grade leather and Alcantara, along with metal trim details such as back-lit (in 64 colours) stainless steel scuff plates for the doors, and aluminium pedals and door hinge pins.

There’s a bit of a downside to all this however: Mercedes-Benz currently only sells one E-Class wagon in Australia, the 143kW/400Nm 1.9-litre turbo-diesel E 220d.
