Bring on the Ford Mustang Shooting Brake

Has Ford pushed the boundaries too far with the Mustang Mach-E? This render has got us thinking…

Not so long back, few people could have imagined that Ford would take the famous pony badge and moniker from the Ford Mustang sports car and apply it to an SUV, bringing us the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E.

And, let’s face it, many are still questioning the wisdom of the move.

Something arguably more palatable, certainly less controversial, yet still pushing the envelope, could be the model you see here: the Ford Mustang Shooting Brake.

These are unofficial images, of course, and the Blue Oval bean counters would surely kybosh any such proposal given SUVs are much hotter property.

But this body style – the work of The Sketch Monkey – really resonates with us, and we reckon plenty of Aussies will find it just as compelling as the Ford Mustang SUV expected to head Down Under once right-hand drive production kicks in.

The artist showed off his rendering skills in a video uploaded to YouTube, where he started with a Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 – and ended up with what a Mustang Shooting Brake might actually look like if it came out of the design centre in Dearborn.

There are plenty of worthy power sources, including the 358kW/860Nm battery-electric powertrain from the just-revealed Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance.

The Aussie-developed 522kW/827Nm 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol engine and other bits from the Ford Mustang R-Spec would also be a perfect fit.

Or a Ford Mustang Mach-1 Shooting Brake, anyone?

We’ve seen some other cool Mustang renderings of late, including a four-door sedan that harks back to the days of the gone-but-never-forgotten Ford Falcon.

Yet it seems that Ford’s focus remains fixed on Mustang as an SUV – Mach-E, that is – with electricity.

Despite initial reservations about putting a Mustang badge on an SUV, Ron Heiser, the engineer in charge of the Mach-E, was one of many to agree the EV was worthy.

“It’s going to be a screamer,” Heiser told carsales at the 2019 Los Angeles motor show.

Ford chairman Bill Ford put it like this: “We are bringing performance and environmental friendliness in one vehicle in a way we have never been able to do before.”

What do you think? SB (Shooting Brake) or SUV? Or LMTHA? (Leave Mustang The Hell Alone)
