Ford UK has pulled the drapes off a new police interceptor based on its Ford Mustang Mach-E after several British police forces expressed interest in the pure-electric SUV.
The Mustang Mach-E, which is hotly tipped to be Ford Australia's first EV in early 2022, is believed to be in demand by law enforcement agencies looking to slash their carbon footprint without sacrificing performance.
Among those asking Ford UK to supply a vehicle for evaluation is the London Met Police.
Creating a special Mustang Mach-E police car for dynamic trials, the first pure-electric Ford cop car is based on the Standard Range AWD variant.
However, models with the Extended Range battery, plus all-wheel drive and rear-drive will also be developed for trials.
As well as adding the new livery, light bars and sirens, Ford engineers say they were careful not to impact on the standard car's range.
That explains why all the blue lights draw directly from the 12-volt battery and not the drive battery.
If the trials are successful, the Met Police and forces in Sussex, Surrey, South Wales, Devon and Cornwall and Police Scotland will be among the first in the UK to add the Ford Mustang Mach-E to their blue-light fleet.
With a range of up to 480km, the Mustang Mach-E with dual motors fitted to the GT Performance model can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 3.5 seconds, which should be plenty quick enough to catch the bad guys.
