Two-wheel drive cars are relatively uncommon in car rallies these days, but Honda is hoping a Civic Type R driven by British ace Guy Wilks will prove a point when it participates in the Coffs Coast Rally starting in Coffs Harbour on November 14.
Wilks, who is the reigning British rally champion, will share the driving with Phil Pugh and is hoping to reprise the performance logged when the pair returned to Australia recently to debut the Type R in the Rally of Canberra,
The JAS Motorsport-built Civic Type R's performance in Canberra was impressive, with the pair placing fifth outright on day one, in a field largely comprising all-wheel drive turbos. The Type R was not so successful on day two, when it was forced to retire with "technical difficulties."
But the performance pleased Honda Australia MD Mr. Yasuhide Mizuno, who said afterwards, "Once again we are taking on the four-wheel drive turbos with our two-wheel drive production car, because we love a challenge."
Some years earlier Wilks and Pugh participated in the Canberra event driving a Civic rally car.
"It seems a long time since we (Phil and I) awoke the suburbs of Canberra with our screaming Civic R3 rally car on the stages! We are looking forward to doing the same in Coffs Harbour."
The Coffs Coast Rally will start from the Coffs Harbour city centre on Friday November 14 and finish on November 16.
