Broadspeed Mini coupe rumoured

Chances are that MINI will introduce a fastback derivative of the Speedster model to be introduced at Frankfurt this year

If you are planning a two-seat MINI speedster convertible, why not spend some extra money and concoct a hardtop, fastback version as well?

This appears to be the thinking as MINI prepares for a Frankfurt motor show unveiling of its new two-seat Speedster convertible - which is undoubtedly the cutest new-era MINI yet.

Borrowing themes from the likes of Porsche 356 and 911 Speedsters and using a chopped windscreen with aero “pods” behind each front seat, the minimalist MINI expresses the pure sports car side of the BMW-created niche-market player.

Word is that the low-slung convertible has wider tracks, as well as reprofiled body panels and a lower waistline, leaving little opportunity for interchangeability with regular Minis.

That's the Speedster. Now, rumours are beginning to emerge of another MINI derivative based on the two-seat body, but with a solid metal roof that could create a modern-day version of the Broadspeed MINI coupes that appeared on road and track in the 1960s.

The Broadspeed coupe was just one of the many spinoffs of the original MINI that appeared during its lifetime. Its stylistic merits were perhaps questionable but the Broadspeed name is still remembered by many.

The new version, although we've not yet seen any photos or renderings, should be somewhat more homogenous if the Speedster's lines are any guide.

As there are no more than rumours at the moment, it is only possible to speculate, but you'd have to imagine a John Cooper Works version of the two-seat hardtop would be a must.

For the same reason a launch date is impossible to predict, although the Broadspeed (that may not be the final name) MINI is expected to follow the Speedster at a comfortable distance.

BMW Australia, which includes MINI under its corporate umbrella, neither confirms nor denies the possibility of a modern-day Broadspeed coupe.

BMW Product Communications Manager Tim James said there has been "No confirmation from the factory at all" concerning a Broadspeed MINI coupe. Rumours are "entirely speculation," he said.

"But the company has always said it will broaden the range of offerings -- it is a growing portfolio," he added.
