Sometimes when brands get celebrities to promote their products it can be a really odd match up that sometimes makes no sense. But when your company name is Die Hard it makes perfect sense to get one of Hollywood's biggest action stars and film franchise to promote your product in an ad of equal blockbuster status.
Bruce Willis is back playing John McClane after nearly a decade to promote Die Hard Batteries. The ad is basically to promote the fact that this brand is now available at a certain auto parts shop in the US but does it in true blockbuster fashion.
The two-minute ad sees McClane and his car stuck with a dead battery. As he’s walking to the nearby Advance Auto Parts store, he sees Theo (Clarence Gilyard Jr.) from the original film sitting in a diner.
Before you know it, McClane is surrounded by bad guys and smashes his way through the shop’s window to escape, a little homage to the original film. He buys a Die Hard battery and makes his escape through an air vent. McClane also bashes an enemy over the head with the Die Hard battery before shielding himself with it from a bullet. Don’t try this at home kids! There’s also a cameo by De’voreaux White as Argyle in his limo.
The ad is of Super Bowl ad quality with its high impact explosions, stunts and star power. Watching it, all you can think of as an Aussie is “Wow, you’d never be allowed to make an ad like this here!”. Welcome to the party, pal.
