Brumby flags rebates for safe cars
State government strategy for safety technology pushVictorians who buy safe cars could be offered financial rewards under a state government strategy to cut the road toll.
Premier John Brumby has flagged possible rebates or cut-price registration for people who buy new cars with advanced safety features, News Limited has reported.
Victoria's peak motoring body, the RACV, joined car makers in welcoming the idea, saying some standard models already offered the safety features.
Mr Brumby said he was considering passing laws to ensure new cars were as safe as possible but would not say what these might be.
The government is considering making technology the next road safety push.
New research reveals safety features, including side curtain airbags and electronic traction control, greatly increase the chances of surviving a serious accident.
"I'm not saying we are categorically moving in this direction," Mr Brumby said.
"But, in my view, what's going to produce the next wave of significant reductions in road fatalities, much of this is going to be driven by the available technologies.
"There's a whole range of options from mandating to offering incentives through to insurance rates, through the TAC (Transport Accident Commission).
