Volkswagen has released its first teaser for its inbound 2027 Volkswagen ID.1 small hatch. Set to rival the BYD Dolphin and MG4, Volkswagen has confirmed it will be priced around €20,000 ($A33,000) when sales start in two years’ time.
Picking up where the old Volkswagen Up left off, the Volkswagen ID.1 is being developed alongside the all-new Volkswagen ID.2 that will be unwrapped later this year, with both cars based on the same MEB Entry architecture.
Previously teased back in 2022, the first sketches released by VW suggested the smallest EV would look like a shrunken ID.3, but the latest tease reveals the small EV will have radically different frontal styling and a blockier profile, hinting at a complete redesign.
Those new headlights come with 3D LED graphics and look like they will be interlinked by a gloss black grille that will feature an illuminated VW emblem. Other takeaways from the new picture include wide wheel arches and large alloy wheels.
Looking through the windscreen we can just see a wide infotainment screen mounted on the dash.
Powering the ID.1, it’s been suggested that the entry EV will come with the option of a 57kWh lithium iron phosphate battery that will deliver a range of up to 400km.
Charging is tipped to be at a rate of up to 200kW, with a 10 to 80 per cent top-up rumoured to take less than 20 minutes.
According to VW CEO Thomas Schäfer, the new Volkswagen ID – which has yet to be officially named the ‘ID.1’ – with be both “affordable” and “high-quality”.
Helping to share the cost of the new Volkswagen ID.1 are the small hatches VW will also spin off as all-electric replacements for the Seat Mii Electric and the Skoda Citigo-e iV.
All are tipped to be made at the Volkswagen-owned plant in Spain.
Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed how big (or small) the ID.1 is but it’s thought to be Polo-sized, seeing it slot in beneath the larger ID.2 that has been confirmed will cost €25,000 ($A41,000) and which is now tipped to arrive in dealerships worldwide in 2026.
Exact timings for the ID.1 have yet to be revealed but Volkswagen says from now until 2027 it will launch nine new models.
