Bugatti boss, Stephan Winkelmann, has announced that the famous French hypercar-maker is considering adding an all-new model to join the Chiron and Divo in its line-up.
Confirming that Bugatti was looking to introduce a second model to sit alongside the current Chiron and Divo family, Winkelmann told
the new car would be more affordable than its multi-million-dollar siblings and, possibly, pure-electric.Created to be a "best-in-segment daily driver", the new model being considered will have a different set of priorities to its French stablemates, says the Bugatti CEO.
"I would see us doing a battery-electric vehicle," said Winkelmann.
"There, the balance between performance and comfort is much more important, and it's about daily usability. This is what I see," he said.
Perhaps surprising for a car-maker that has, in its modern history at least, focused on record-breaking top speeds, Winkelman said 'speed' for the new car "will be less important".
During the interview, Winkelmann wouldn't be drawn on any more specifics around the car currently being explored, but said Bugatti is already working on proposals for the new car.
It's thought than without an emphasis on outright speed, Bugatti might be able to base its pure-electric supercar on an existing platform within the Volkswagen Group rather than invest hundreds of millions developing another bespoke architecture.
If Bugatti decides on a pure-electric powertrain, the new model could be based on the same J1 underpinnings that will be used on the forthcoming Porsche Taycan.
This could see the French supercar share its dual motors and lithium-ion battery technology with Porsche and help the car-maker develop its new model in a fraction of the time.
Once on sale, there should be no shortage of buyers willing to part with a still-significant amount of cash to have a second Bugatti in their collection.
According to the French car-maker, the typical Chiron owner has -- on average -- 42 cars at home, with most owning not one but two Bugattis.
