Lots of limited editions are just a load of bull, but this one is worth taking seriously. Even Lamborghini thinks so.
When the Italian supercar maker found out the hot tuners at Renaultsport were planning a special edition of the RS 265 Megane to celebrate Renault-powered Red Bull Racing’s 2012 F1 constructors’ world championship it made sure it wouldn’t come with a bull sticker on the grille.
And that’s no bull. Lamborghini’s emblem is a fighting bull set on a shield and it wasn’t too keen on anyone impinging on its copyright.
The Megane RS Red Bull Racing RB8 – there was an RB7 to celebrate the 2011 victory too - goes on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2013 and there are 120 examples coming here. Of course there is a strong local connection to the car through Aussie Red Bull driver Mark Webber, although his team-mate is the dreaded Seb ‘Multi 21’ Vettel.
Renault Australia isn’t talking dollars yet, but this car combines the Cup chassis with the top-spec Trophy+’s sticky Bridgestone tyres. The fiery 195kW F4R 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, limited slip diff and Perfohub front-end are all mixed in as well, so it will be a great drive.
Standard equipment includes the first use of Renault’s R-Link multimedia system in the Megane RS range (it will spread to other variants too), an upgraded RS Monitor that works with R-Links seven inch screen and includes a special Red Bull Racing home page, some information displayed in 3D form, data saving ability on a memory stick and the usual real-time access to power output data, 0-100km/h times and more.
Cosmetically, the limited edition RS includes an exclusive ‘Crépuscule Blue’ finish that takes its inspiration directly from the RB8 race car, while there are Red Bull Racing graphics at the rear and on the sides. There are Platinum Grey details for the door handles, door mirror housing and rear lip spoiler. Finally, a monochrome laurel on the rear side windows celebrates the constructors’ world title.
Inside, exclusive features include Red Bull Racing branding on the numbered aluminium sill guards and carpet mats. The same logo appears on the headrests of the Recaro seats, which are trimmed in a new leather/fabric upholstery.
