BYD announces fix to controversial warranty

BYD vehicles gain improved warranty Down Under as Chinese brand consolidates new car coverage, back-dated to 2022

BYD is yet again changing its new vehicle warranty coverage but this time, it's much better news for both current and future owners.

The rapidly growing new energy brand is showing serious commitment to Australian drivers, announcing a major upgrade to its previously controversial vehicle warranty program which is not only effective immediately but also back-dated to its first local deliveries from August 2022 when the Atto 3 SUV arrived.

That includes the standard six-year/150,000km vehicle warranty being extended to the entire car, while an eight-year/160,000km warranty for the battery and drive unit continues.

The new 'bumper-to-bumper' coverage marks a significant improvement over the previous policy, which offered varying cover periods for different components.

Under the old terms, key items like the infotainment system and suspension had just three years/60,000km and four-years/100,000km of coverage, respectively.

Now, BYD is streamlining its support with a more generous and uniform offering.

The announcement comes as the brand celebrates over 40,000 vehicle sales across Australia, a milestone that underlines its growing presence in the local market.

Adding to the momentum, the Sealion 7 electric SUV - which launched in February - has just earned a five-star ANCAP safety rating, joining the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute.

With stronger aftersales backing and continued safety credentials, BYD is cementing its place as a serious contender in Australia’s electric future - but a future with its current distributor, EVDirect, remains uncertain.

Earlier this year, the Chinese manufacturer shocked the industry when it bypassed EVDirect for national distribution of its new luxury brand Denza in Australia, which is due to launch later in 2025.

The decision marks a significant shift in BYD’s local strategy as it cuts out the middleman, EVDirect, and opts for full factory backing for its premium sub-brand Down Under.
