BYD has announced it has sold 40,000 vehicles in less than three years, since the brand relaunched in Australia in 2022 with its local distributor, EVDirect.
The Chinese car-making giant says it is now on track to shift 40,000 cars in 2025 alone.
That sales milestone is remarkable, as it took Tesla 10 years to rack up 40,000 sales and it only sold 40,000 vehicles in a single year in 2022, following the huge rise in popularity of the Model 3 and then the Model Y.
Tesla’s best year was 2023 when it sold 45,000 vehicles – a figure BYD might come close to in 2025.
Originally launched back in 2021 under Nexport with the original E6 and T3 models, sales of BYD cars didn’t take off until the arrival of the Atto 3 small SUV in 2022 under the stewardship of EVDirect.
Today BYD’s line-up includes the Dolphin, Seal, Atto 3, and Sealion 7, as well as the Sealion 6 and Shark 6 plug-in hybrids.
Helping to fuel this year’s growth is the arrival of the Shark 6 plug-in ute, which has a head start on the Ford Ranger PHEV.
BYD sold 3281 vehicles in February 2025, a little adrift of the 3333 it needs to deliver each month to surpass 40,000 in year, but of that figure the Shark 6 accounted for over 2000 sales, and that number is expected to rise.
Bolstering sales further will be the launch of BYD’s luxurious Denza brand later this year, which will be introduced as part of a factory-backed operation without the involvement of EVDirect.
Commenting on the brand’s success, EVDirect CEO David Smitherman said BYD’s momentum in Australia would only build. “With the Shark 6, Sealion 7, and soon the Essentials range, we’re introducing new vehicles in segments and at price points never seen before.”
