BYD sold an incredible 4.27 million vehicles in 2024, making a huge 41.3 per cent jump over the 3 million vehicles it shifted in 2023.
If there was any doubt the Chinese brand's place at the big boy table was premature, it has now been dispelled.
Last year BYD said it sold an impressive 1,764,992 EVs – a respectable 12 per cent boost on 2023 volumes – but driving the huge growth was the uptake in its plug-in hybrid powered vehicles, such as the Sealion 6. An astonishing 2,485,378 BYD PHEVs found homes last year, which was up 72.8 per cent on the 2023 tally.
Recently published data suggests that despite BYD's sales heroics, the brand came tantalisingly close to usurping Tesla in 2024 for EV sales. Last year saw Tesla ship 1,789,226 vehicles.
However, BYD is unlikely to be too concerned, as it is expected to beat both Ford and Honda for global sales when both car-making giants publish their 2024 sales performance.
Out of all the cars it sold worldwide the majority of BYDs delivered were in its home in China, with only around 500,000 models sold in export markets.
As well as selling vehicles, BYD has now cemented itself as the second-largest battery producer in China, with the firm supplying power packs for the likes of Toyota, NIO and Tesla.
