The Finer Details

Preliminary June sales data points to a record-breaking month for the Australian new-car market, driven by strong end-of-financial-year demand and rising interest in electrified vehicles as the Iran war continues.

Toyota retained its long-held position as market leader, delivering 19,124 vehicles for the month. However, the margin was razor-thin, with BYD achieving a record 18,881 deliveries – just 243 units behind. It marks the closest challenge to Toyota’s dominance in roughly 25 years and highlights the rapid rise of the Chinese brand since its Australian arrival in 2022.

Toyota’s result pushes its year-to-date tally to about 95,000 vehicles.

While that leaves a significant gap to a potential 220,000-plus annual total, the brand continues to benefit from a substantial order backlog that could support stronger results in the second half of the year.

The Toyota HiLux led the brand’s June performance with around 5200 sales, followed by the RAV4 at 4140.

Both models are transitioning to new-generation versions, with supply ramping up as demand builds. Toyota’s bZ4X electric SUV is also gaining traction as the company expands its electrified offering.

BYD’s June result represents a major step forward, more than 10,000 units above its previous monthly record.

The brand captured a 13.5 per cent market share, closing to within 0.2 percentage points of Toyota’s 13.7 per cent. It also marks the third consecutive month BYD has finished second overall, with 52,335 vehicles delivered in the first half of 2026.

BYD Sealion 7

Leading BYD’s charge was the Sealion 7, which recorded 4730 sales.

It was followed by the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute (3398), Atto 2 (2482) and Sealion 6 (2218). The brand’s premium offshoot, Denza, has also contributed nearly 1800 deliveries in the June quarter since launching earlier this year.

In the EV space more broadly, Tesla posted its best-ever month in Australia with 8670 registrations. The Model Y accounted for 8072 of those likely making it the top selling new vehicle in June 2026.

It also sees Tesla set a new single-model monthly benchmark, while the Model 3 contributed 568 units. Tesla’s overall performance was up 88.9 per cent year-on-year, driven largely by a 133.5 per cent increase in Model Y sales.

Ford rounded out the top three brands for June, recording 9189 sales and securing a 6.6 per cent market share.

June is traditionally the strongest month for new-vehicle sales in Australia as buyers finalise purchases before the end of the financial year.

In 2026, that effect appears to have been amplified by rising fuel prices and increasing consumer appetite for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The Road Ahead

Official VFACTS data is due for release any time now and will confirm whether June 2026 sets a new all-time record for monthly sales.

Beyond the headline numbers, the results are expected to underline shifting market dynamics, including the rapid rise of Chinese brands, growing electrification and sustained demand for utes and SUVs.

Toyota’s ability to maintain its leadership position will likely depend on clearing back orders, while BYD’s momentum suggests the competitive gap could narrow further in the months ahead.
