The 2024 BYD Shark ute has been teased again ahead of its world debut in Mexico next Tuesday (May 14).
This week’s official Instagram teaser includes full-frame images of the Chinese’s brand’s all-new dual-cab 4x4 ute, which will bring plug-in hybrid powertrain technology (dubbed DMO in this case) to the Australian market for the first time by the end of this year, pending any delays.
“From remote towns to boundless deserts, the BYD SHARK awaits your endless adventures,” said BYD Global in its social media post.
“With its robust off-road capabilities and the DMO technology, leave range anxiety behind and savor the journey of exploration.”
The three fresh images, which show a trio of young men about to embark on a desert road trip in the BYD Shark as part of its pre-release marketing campaign, reveal a few more detail than we’ve seen before.
We know from previous teasers and spy pics that the BYD Shark will be a bona-fide dual-cab 4x4 dual-cab to rival the top-selling Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, but these images show more of its off-road and load-carrying features.
These include decent ground clearance, black lower cladding around the entire vehicle including its wheel-arches, a bold black rear ‘sports bar’ and a spray-in bed liner (but no split tailgate as per the new GWM Cannon Alpha).
Beating the 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV to market, BYD’s second plug-in hybrid model after the upcoming Sealion 6 mid-size SUV will bring a road trip-friendly plug-in hybrid powertrain – dubbed DMI, which stands for Dual Motor Intelligence – that’s claimed to deliver 100km of EV range and a total range of about 1000km.
No details have yet been announced, but you can expect a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine supported by two electric motors – one for each axle – and producing total outputs of around 500kW and 760Nm.
Ford is yet to announce full powertrain specs for the Ranger PHEV, but its 2.3-litre turbo-petrol engine is combined with a single transmission-housed electric motor to offer 45km of EV range and an expected 800Nm of torque.
BYD is yet to announce powertrain specs or other key details like towing capacity for its ladder-frame Shark, which will be one of at least two all-new utes to become available Down Under by mid-2025, when the Kia Tasman goes on sale here.
