Ever hankered for a piece of American Grafitti? We can't deliver the classic rod from the movie, but you can see the next best thing...
A hot rod built in California to comply with Australian regulations will be on display at Meguiar's MotorEx being held this weekend at the Sydney Showgrounds.
The classic red and white '32 Ford Roadster was shipped from the So-Cal Speed Shop in the USA to Oz Rods in Queensland, who prepared and painted the body, installed the interior and completed the wiring ready to hit the road.
The car is the work of American hot rod luminary Pete Chapouris and sidekick Jimmy Shine. It was inspired by Clyde Sturdy's Class B Modified that ran 228km/h at Bonneville in 1951 and is symbolises Chapouris' chain of eight speed shops across the USA, each of which has a 32 Roadster on display.
Chapouris has been responsible for many hot rod creations, but his most famous is the black-with-flames '34 Ford coupe that featured in the film California Kid and was awarded Hot Rod of the Century. Other creations included a pair of Harley Davidson HogZZillas and the '36 Coupe, Kopperhed, built for Billy F. Gibbons of the band ZZ Top.
The So-Cal Roadster is signed by Pete Chapouris and Jimmy Shines and is up for auction on the Sunday following the show. The organisers say it has already attracted a "massive amount of interest".
