Camaro heads to GT4 comp

Burgeoning GT underclass gets another US brand on board

Chevrolet has joined the growing ranks of GT4 racing worldwide. The bow-tie brand will debut a GT4-spec version of its Camaro muscle car at this weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge (PWC) round at the Grand Prix of St Petersburg in Florida.

Dubbed the Camaro GT4.R the new car is based on the ZL1 1LE hot-rodded production Camaro.

The car will be campaigned by well-known PWC runner Blackdog Speed Shop and driven by Lawson Aschenbach and Tony Gaples.

In the US-based series, the Camaro will take on the likes of GT4-spec Porsche Cayman, Mustang GT350 and others including the KTM X-Bow GT4. Says Chevrolet, the GT4.R is built to “global GT4 specifications”.

The GT4.R is powered by a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine coupled to a six-speed sequential gearbox. Unlike the Reiter GT3-spec Camaro, much of the GT4.R remains production-based.

No news yet of whether any Camaro GT4.Rs are expected to hit racetracks Down Under.

Following the recent local GT4 debut on the undercard of the Bathurst 12 Hour, interest was piqued regarding the importation of a small number of GT4-spec Mustangs. The Ford pony car racer is built in GT4 spec by Multimatic, the same aftermarket company that assembled Ford’s Le Mans winning twin-turbo V6 GT supercar.
