Queensland firm Performax International has announced that it can import a V6 Chevrolet Camaro and convert it to right-hand drive for you, but you better have $129,000 on hand. As for a V8 version, add a further $10,000 to your budget for the 6.2-litre SS version pictured here with former Camaro pilot, 'Big-revvin' Kevin Bartlett.
Performax International revealed the pricing on Day One of the Nikon Super GP event on the Gold Coast. The company, which claims the converted Camaro is the first right-hand drive model of its type available anywhere in the world, takes care of all ADR-compliance issues for the buyer ahead of delivery and expects to begin delivering customers' cars in December or January.
"We understand this is the first RHD 2010 Camaro built anywhere in the world and we're proud to be bringing such an eagerly-awaited new car with an iconic badge back to Australia," said Performax International General Manager Nicholas Vandenberg.
"It's certainly the best RHD car we have ever produced in both engineering and appearance. The Camaro SS drives just like it does it does from the factory, meaning it has the same outstanding handling, tactile steering and powerful V8 performance noted by American reviewers. The driving position, including the relationship between steering wheel, pedals and seat, is perfect.
"Thanks to our industry-leading computer-aided-design and plastic injection moulding technology, we have been able to re-create the fascia, door panels, centre console, ventilation ducts, wiper cowl and other parts with total accuracy of fit and finish.
According to Vandenberg, the company is already holding "half a dozen" orders for the car, which, as it was displayed at the Gold Coast event over the weekend, is powered by the LS3 V8 driving through a six-speed manual transmission.
The Camaro sits on a modified version of the 'Zeta' platform developed by Holden for the VE Commodore and global applications. To date, the Camaro is the one 'international' application that has actually gone into production. Holden has reported that the Camaro will not be officially produced in right-hand drive form.
