Canadian caught sleeping while using Tesla Autopilot at 150km/h
Tesla Model S driver features serious charges after witness catches glimpse of driver asleep at the wheel at highway speedsA Canadian man is facing a huge fine and jail time after being caught sleeping in his Tesla Model S while its Autopilot was activated on the highway.
The incident, which is said to have occurred back in September, involves 20-year-old Leran Cai who was subsequently arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and charged with numerous offences after being spotted sleeping behind the wheel on Canada's Highway 2, south of the city of Edmonton.
According to broadcaster Global News, a witness spotted Cai and his passenger with both their seats completely reclined.
Alerting the police, as well as sleeping behind the wheel, once the cops caught up with Cai on Highway 2 he was also speeding, with the Model S clocked with its Autopilot set at 150km/h.
According to legal experts, the case involving a driver asleep behind the wheel with a semi-autonomous cruise control activated is the first in Canadian legal history.
Cai will now appear in court on January 29, 2021, to face the dangerous driving charge that in Canada is a criminal offence that could see the 20-year-old serve time behind bars if found guilty.
