Make this fun Lego car key hanger in four easy steps

To alleviate life’s stresses, some people do yoga, take long hot soaks in the bathtub, listen to Gregorian chanting or attempt levitation with transcendental meditation.

Another tactic is to focus your mind on a tactile task. Knitting. Piecing a puzzle together. Something creative you can lose yours.

Lego is a great way to switch off and find your Zen while being constructive and making something useful. Here’s how to make a Lego keyring and key hanger set – so you’ll never again need to ask yourself, “Now, where did I put my car keys?”

Here’s what you’ll need:

The essentials:

  • a lego base plate
  • Lego pieces with holes that go the whole way through (either Classic or Technic, whatever you have handy)
  • split rings for keys
  • spare Lego pieces (the single-row ones, whatever they’re called)

Optional:

  • pliers (we’ll get to this later)

Step 1

Pick out a bunch of holey pieces. They’re your holy grails this crafternoon. You could just leave it at that, but it wouldn’t be much fun. Live a little. Experiment with colour and shape as though you’re Rei Kawakubo. Aim for Etsy cuteness, but make it pocket-sized. This’ll be your new keyring.

Step 2

To attach a split ring to its new accoutrement, thread the split ring through a hole in each of the Lego keyrings you’ve just assembled. We’re not gonna sugar-coat it: this step is really freakin’ annoying. Nailbiters will find it a challenge, and if you have long nails, you may break one (or more). To avoid such casualties, use split rings that aren’t super chunky or stiff. If that’s all you’ve got, we suggest using pliers to prise the ring open before threading it through your Lego. Once you’ve accomplished this task and caught your breath, lean back and admire your craftiness.

Step 3

If you’re in any danger of forgetting this craft project’s purpose, it’s probably best to include an in-built reminder in the design. It could also serve as a reminder not to leave the house without your new keys, kind of like the Post-its we leave on the back of the front door that say, “Remember your lunch.” Sometimes you’ve just gotta spell it out for yourself. ¯\_(?)_/¯

Step 4

Affix your new-and-definitely-improved Lego base plate to a wall near your front door. Somewhere accessible. Somewhere visible. Somewhere you’ll notice it the moment you walk through the door, or the moment after. Stand back and check out how gosh-darn cute it is.

Bonus adulting tip: put your keys back on their hooks as soon as you walk through the door. Make it one of the first things you do and it’ll soon be such an ingrained habit that you’ll do it automatically.
