New proposals being considered by the European Commission could see car-makers forced to produce vehicles that emit on average 50 per cent less CO2 emissions than 2021 targets – a massive impost compared to the current mandatory reduction of 37.5 per cent.
Set to send shockwaves through the car industry, the bigger reduction will prompt huge criticism from car manufacturers based in and out of Europe.
The more ambitious targets could force car-makers to develop yet more new technology to curb emissions that in turn would likely translate to vehicle price rises and be ultimately passed on to the consumer.
According to
, which has seen the leaked proposals drafted by the European Commission, the EU will also set out plans for its members to slash emissions in general by at least 55 per cent against 1990 levels. That's a 10 per cent greater reduction than originally targeted, with bigger incentives for carbon-neutral power generation set to play a pivotal role.
