Cars that cost the same as the median house price

Car prices are now in a similar situation due to increased popularity, new technology and the higher expectations and demands of buyers. Although a used Hyundai i30 can fetch the same price as a brand new one, it is in the upper echelons of the car market where the price of a new set of wheels can be eyewatering.

It really comes down to the question, do you buy a house or a luxury car? If you can afford it, why not both. To put it into content, according to the CoreLogic Home Property Value Index released in January 2021, the national home value index rose 3% over the year to a national median house price of $583,157.

Values in regional areas saw a 7.9% increase for a combined median of $428,919, while it was a 1.7% increase for major capital cities for a combined median of $659,731. It was the individual capital city median prices which were sky high and after doing a little browse across carsales, we found a car price matched to each capital city’s median house price.

They say the harbour city is the Rolls-Royce of property in this country. And with Sydney having the highest median house price, you would expect luxury in every detail. Unfortunately, some of the most derelict houses around are so overvalued that for the same price you might as well just live in a Rolls-Royce Phantom. The nation's capital is much the same.

Both Hobart and the Bentley Flying Spur have a new lease on life which has introduced itself to a whole new audience. Bentley is an old brand which in recent times has seen itself modernise, move with new trends and throw away convention. Hobart has done the same, with a vibrant food, art and nature scene, bringing in a whole new generation of fans.

This cashed-up Commodore has been given a second wind and is even more cashed up than before thanks to the end of Holden and HSV as we know it. Much like Perth's housing market that rose significantly during the mining boom, it again is seeing higher prices across the board.

A little bit fancy but done family style. This is the perfect description for both Adelaide and the Bentley Bentayga SUV. Steeped in history and a bit of old-world luxury, both the city of churches and the new SUV from British carmaker Bentley share this in common as well. Is it the best in the market, no. But is it a relaxed, chilled and friendly environment, very much so.

Darwin is on the lower end of the median house price scale in Australia and you will get some good value for money compared to places like Sydney and Melbourne. What you do miss out on is four different seasons in a year as well as the knowledge that you're safe from crocodiles. Much like Darwin, the Lamborghini Huracan is on the cheaper side of the luxury car scale and it is unique. But you do need to make sacrifices like your lower back and the ability to drive into a multi-level carpark.
