carsales broadens its horizons with carbar subscription push

Australia's biggest car marketplace is thinking beyond the transaction – and a new collaboration could change how Australians think about getting behind the wheel

Buying and selling cars has always been carsales' bread and butter. But a new referral partnership with car subscription service carbar signals the platform is starting to think differently about what it means to help Australians get on the road.

The tie-up will see carbar integrated into the carsales experience as a trusted referral partner, giving users the option to explore flexible, subscription-based driving arrangements alongside the traditional listings the platform is famous for.

Think of it as more ways to move, rather than a replacement for what's already there.

The timing makes sense. One in three Australians say they're open to non-ownership vehicle models, car subscription appetite has tripled year-on-year, and three in four Australians feel financial stress around car ownership.

carbar's model bundles insurance, registration and maintenance into a single weekly payment, with the ability to swap or cancel without the long-term commitment* - aimed at buyers who are cost-conscious, EV-curious, or simply not ready to commit to a purchase just yet.

carbar is also rolling out something new: Group Subscription. It's a shared approach to car access, designed to make subscribing more affordable through collective demand for the vehicle.

Here's how it works. Customers register interest in a specific vehicle, and the earlier they join the group for that model, the cheaper the upfront portion of their subscription cost.

The result? A smarter way in, all the flexibility and inclusions of carbar's standard subscription, just at a lower weekly rate.

For carsales, the pitch is about broadening its role rather than disrupting it – tapping into a growing appetite for flexibility and signalling that the way Australians access cars is evolving.
