This year’s winner of carsales COTY will be announced on November 16, but before then we’ll announce our top 10 finalists plus two wildcards next week and once again you’ll get to have your say via a reader poll to decide our 2022 People’s Choice award.

Each step of the carsales COTY determination process is adjudicated by a combination of judges’ votes and cost of ownership rankings – including resale values – courtesy of Australia’s number one automotive valuation authority, RedBook.

So to get things started, our list of 30 contenders for carsales COTY 2022 is revealed below (in alphabetical order).

Each model is a standout performer in its class, representing the best of hundreds of new model variants released in the past 12 months. Each of the vehicles meets our strict eligibility criteria, as follows:

  • All-new or substantially upgraded model
  • Series-production model on sale this year
  • Available for testing by October 31
  • Priced below $250,000 (at least one variant)
  • Fitted with autonomous emergency braking and a reversing camera as standard across the range

The latter requirement ruled out the new Subaru WRX, Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR 86, manual versions of which are not fitted with AEB.

Other new models released since COTY 2021 but failing to make our list of 30 COTY 2022 contenders include the new Audi RS 3, Chevrolet Corvette, Citroen C4, Nissan Z, Suzuki S-Cross and Volkswagen Golf R and Caddy, the facelifted Hyundai Palisade and Skoda Karoq, and the Lexus UX 300e and Haval Jolion Hybrid.

Meantime the global supply chain crisis scuppered the chances of the Audi e-tron GT, Maserati Grecale, Peugeot 308 and the new Nissan QASHQAI, X-TRAIL and Pathfinder, all of which will now arrive too late for testing this year and will be carried over to carsales COTY 2023.
