It’s that time of the year again… carsales Car of the Year is go for 2023 and Australia’s number-one automotive consumer award will once again be presented in partnership with top car insurer Bingle.

carsales COTY uniquely combines the automotive industry’s best consumer-focussed data and the expertise of our most senior road testers, who’ll once again cast their votes after a full week of closed- and public-road testing.

This year’s carsales Car of the Year will be announced on November 15, but before then we’ll reveal our top 10 finalists plus two wildcards next week, and once again you’ll get to have your say via a reader poll to decide our 2023 People’s Choice award.

Each step of the carsales COTY determination process is adjudicated by a combination of judges’ votes and cost of ownership rankings – including resale values – courtesy of Australia’s number-one automotive valuation authority, RedBook.

So to get things started, our list of 30 contenders for carsales COTY 2023 is revealed below in alphabetical order.

Each model is a standout performer in its class, representing the best of hundreds of new model variants released in the past 12 months.

Each of the vehicles meets our strict eligibility criteria, as follows:

  • All-new or substantially upgraded model
  • Series-production model on sale this year
  • Available for testing by October 9
  • Priced below $250,000 (at least one variant)
  • Fitted with autonomous emergency braking and a reversing camera as standard across the range

Sadly, a notable absentee from carsales COTY 2023 will be the all-new Kia EV9, with shipping delays preventing the large seven-seat electric SUV from arriving in time for testing, leaving Kia without an entrant following the EV6’s win last year.
