Carton of milk... And a Volkswagen

German supermarket adds cars to its inventory

Another sign of the changing car industry has been recorded in Germany with discount supermarket chain Lidl announcing plans to sell cars via its website. The chain - Aldi's main rival in Europe - has tied-up with car distributor ATG-Automobile GmbH for the offer.

The company is offering two cars initially a Opel Corsa for 10,570 euros ($20,906) and a Volkswagen Cross Polo for 13,645 euros ($26,988).

Customers can see the cars specifications online and then choose their preferred engine, colour and options by simply clicking on a menu.

Despite the German economy being in recession, new car sales are growing thanks to a government initiative to give new car buyers 2500 euros ($4,944) if they replace a car older than nine years with a more economical and cleaner new vehicle.

"Lidl and ATG-Automobile GmbH work with the same target audience," says Lidl spokeswoman, Petra Trabert.

"We are geared toward the customer who seeks quality in conjunction with a favourable price."

What's next? Aldi to offer Audis? Safeway to sell SAABs? Dimmeys to deal Dodges? Or Coles to convey Commodores...
