Honda has found itself in hot water after a viewer claimed that one of the commercials for its new Accord depicted dangerous driving in a bid to pitch its latest mid-sized offering at a younger customer base. The scene under scrutiny featured an actor in the Accord overtaking another car being operated by a mature driver in a particularly staid manner on a country road. A consumer complained that the overtaking manoeuvre occurred on a blind corner, thus rendering the move dangerous.
After thorough investigation, the Advertising Standards Board (ASB) determined that the ad was not in breach of standards set by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and did not infringe the Advertiser Code of Ethics.
Careful viewing of the footage revealed that the Accord in the commercial did not exceed the speed limit, and the Board commented that “the lines are marked as a broken line on the left side of the line indicating that a driver is legally able to pass at this section of the road.”
The complaint was subsequently rejected. You can read the full complaint and the findings here. Read the latest news and reviews on your mobile, iPhone or PDA at carsales' mobile site...
