Cheap 2025 Tesla Model Q to debut in first half of next year

BYD Dolphin-rival announced during investors call will be priced around $45k

A senior Tesla executive has announced the 2025 Tesla Model Q will be launched globally in the first half of next year as the new entry point to the US EV-maker’s portfolio.

Confirming the Model Q was coming during an investor meeting with Deutsche Bank, Tesla’s head of investor relations said the cheap new EV would be priced from less than $US30,000 ($A46,500) and could possibly even cost less than $US25,000 ($A38,800).

According to Global China EV, the contents of the call revealed the Model Q would be built on the brand’s “latest platform” and is being developed under the ‘Redwood’ codename.

The Model Q is said to be 15 per cent smaller and 30 per cent lighter than the current Model 3, with the new car having an overall length of around 3988mm.

Thanks to advanced production techniques the Model Q will also be cheaper to produce than the Model 3, potentially by up to 50 per cent.

The Model Q will be powered by a range of lithium iron phosphate batteries with buyers offered two sizes –?a 53kWh unit and a larger 75kWh pack, with both single- and dual-motor configurations available.

Long range versions will be capable of covering more than 500km on a single charge.

The Model Q is being pitched as a direct rival for both the Volkswagen ID.3 and the BYD Dolphin that both are said to sell as many as 20,000 vehicles a month (combined) in China.

Motivating the 2025 launch of the Model Q is said to be internal targets that demand that the car-maker achieves growth of between 20-30 per cent for 2025 alone.

As well as the Model Q’s debut next year, Tesla has already officially confirmed it will roll out a facelifted Model Y being readied under the Project Juniper moniker.

It’s thought more details on the new cheap Tesla will be released shortly, including a response to the rumours from the brand’s outspoken CEO, Elon Musk.

Adding credibility to the 2025 Model Q theory is the teaser Musk himself released back in June that included three models under drapes thought to be both the Model Q, Model 2 small car and new van or people mover.
