Tesla is set to launch its next-generation battery pack in the Model 3 it sells in China, and it's claimed to be cheaper to make and longer lasting, finally giving the US EV-maker price parity with equivalent petrol and diesel models.
Claimed to have been developed to have a life-span of one million miles before needing to be replaced, the batteries have been created to have a second life as a storage facility for power companies.
Another huge benefit of the new cells, according to newswire
, is they will use little or no cobalt and their chemical composition allows the batteries to store more energy for longer. The next-gen Tesla batteries are also said to be more durable and can better deal with repeated fast charging and the heat that generates.
Originally, the new batteries were supposed to have been launched later this June, but those plans were reportedly shelved following the outbreak of the coronavirus.
As well as the new batteries, Tesla is also set to radically reinvent the way it manufactures them, with a heavily automated new process that's claimed to significantly increase output while slashing labour costs.
The new robotic battery assemblers will make their debut in the car-maker's upcoming Terafactories that are claimed to be 30 times larger than the current Gigafactory based in Reno, Nevada in the US.
When Tesla's next-gen batteries arrive they will quickly be followed by the arrival of similar long-lasting cells from GM, which also claims is on the eve of a battery breakthrough.
