Volvo sister brand Polestar has announced it is adding a new single-motor powertrain to its 2021 Polestar 2 range, giving it a new entry-level model to challenge rivals like the Tesla Model 3.
Joining the existing all-wheel drive dual-motor Polestar 2 that produces 300kW and 660Nm, the new base model comes equipped with a smaller 64kWh battery and a single electric motor that churns out 165kW/330Nm and provides for a range of up to 439km.
The same single-motor version is also available with the dual-motor's bigger 78kWh battery, which hands it 170kW (but no more torque) and a respectable 539km range – 11km more than the range-topping all-wheel drive model.
In Europe, thanks to the introduction of the single-motor version, the Polestar 2 range now kicks off at around €40,000 ($A63,000).
Visually, the new single-motor Polestar 2 variants are identical to the flagship dual-motor versions, although the Performance Pack that adds adjustable Ohlins dampers, larger 20-inch rims and bigger brakes remains exclusive to the all-wheel drive electric SUV.
As standard, the single-motor models come with 19-inch alloys, LED headlights and an eight-speaker sound system, plus front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera.
Also available is a Plus Pack that adds a 13-speaker premium sound system, panoramic roof and heat treatment for the steering wheel and seats. It also includes a heat pump that draws residual thermal energy from the drivetrain in chilly temperatures to maximise the range.
Buyers who want semi-autonomous cruise control will have to pay extra for the Pilot Pack that also adds pixel LED headlights, 360-degree surround cameras, blind spot warning, cross traffic alert and rear collision warning.
Confirmed to launch in Australia in early 2022, it's thought all three variants of the Polestar 2 range will be offered Down Under.
Pricing for the Polestar 2 should be released towards the end of 2021 in preparation for the brand's launch here.
