Cheaper non-hybrid GWM Tank 300 released

Non-electrified versions of China’s answer to the Jeep Wrangler priced up to $10K lower than hybrid stablemates

UPDATED 05/06/2023 11:00am: GWM Australia has confirmed significantly better fuel-efficiency figures than it previously announced for both the GWM Tank 300 petrol and hybrid models.

The official ADR Combined-cycle fuel consumption figures are 9.5L/100km for the Tank 300 petrol and 8.4L/100km for the Tank 300 Hybrid.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE PUBLISHED 20/05/2023 1:35pm: The number of 2023 GWM Tank 300 variants now offered in Australia has doubled from two to four following the arrival of the non-electrified 2023 Tank 300 Lux and Ultra, which shave at least $9000 off the asking prices of their hybrid counterparts.

Lowering the entry price of the Chinese off-road brand’s Jeep Wrangler rival to less than $50,000, the new petrol-only GWM Tank 300 variants are priced from $46,990 and $50,990 drive-away respectively.

But they also go without any performance-enhancing or fuel-saving petrol-electric technology in favour of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine offering 162kW/380Nm – a lot less than 258kW/615Nm outputs of their hybrid siblings, which add a 78kW/268Nm electric motor.

The force-fed 2.0-litre drinks a claimed 10.7L/100km of petrol on the combined cycle (up from 10.3L/100km for hybrid variants) and sends power to the selectable 4x4 system via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

As usual for GWM products, the Tank 300 Lux and Ultra’s standard equipment lists are mirror images of the corresponding hybrid spec sheets, with the obvious exception of the powertrains and corresponding hardware.

Headline toys on the Lux version include 17-inch alloys, LED exterior lighting, power-adjustable front seats, Comfort-Tek leather upholstery, a 12.3-inch infotainment interface, matching 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, smartphone mirroring, a nine-speaker sound system, sunroof, 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, locking rear differential and All-Terrain mode selection.

Spending the extra $4000 on the Ultra, which costs a full $10,000 less than the Ultra Hybrid, ups the opulence factor with Nappa leather, 18-inch wheels, heated and cooled front seats with massage function for the driver, premium audio system, 64-colour ambient lighting, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, wireless charging and a front differential lock.

Safety gear for both variants comprises seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane centre keep, emergency lane keep, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, rear cross traffic alert, tyre pressure monitoring and parking sensors at both ends.

A seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty is also included in the price, as per every other GWM-Haval Australia product.

How much does the 2023 Tank 300 cost?
Lux – $46,990
Ultra – $50,990
Lux Hybrid – $55,990
Ultra Hybrid – $60,990
* Prices are drive-away
