Chery has handed over a pair of SUVs to the NSW Police Force, with the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 9 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUVs set to undertake community engagement and crime prevention tasks, rather than proper crime-fighting duties.
The pair of SUVs are now on duty at Burwood Crime Prevention Unit and will be used for “youth outreach, crime prevention initiatives and community engagement”.
That means, just like the donated Suzuki Jimny deployed to Lake Macquarie last year, you won’t see the stickered-up PHEV SUVs conducting high-speed pursuits or carrying radar equipment to bust speeding drivers, as beyond the fluorescent po-po livery, they’re fitted out with little more than a iPad-sized tablet.
Instead, they’ll be used between the inner-west Sydney suburbs of Earlwood to Rhodes, for community-focused activities and probably coffee and lunch runs.

The pair of ‘Super Hybrid’ PHEVs, a mid-size Tiggo 7 five-seat SUV and flagship Tiggo 9 seven-seater, are on loan from the Chinese brand for a 12-month period, meaning they won’t be fighting crime forever.
“Policing one of the most culturally diverse communities in Australia, this collaboration supports our ongoing focus on safety, inclusion, and genuine connection with the community we serve,” commander of Burwood PAC superintendent Christine McDonald said.
“We are delighted to partner with Chery, a global automotive brand at the forefront of innovation and technology.”

The SUVs have already been on duty in Burwood for about a week and are proving to be a hit with the cops already, with one taking to the organisation’s Facebook page to praise the acceleration of the SUVs.
“Tell me about it… literally like taking off on a [airplane emoji]”, said the Burwood Police Area Command page in response to a commenter.
