Chevrolet Camaro, by Performax

Holden has its fingers crossed for RHD Camaro production, but a Queensland firm has beaten it to the punch

Bob Lutz, a vice president of importance at New GM, asserts that the new Camaro is a cert for right hand drive and Australia, but it's still just talk.

While Holden would welcome a RHD Camaro to further empower the local line-up, the coupe's business case is far from watertight. Not from a major maker's view, anyway.

That situation suits Performax International just fine.

The Gympie, Qld, based steering conversions specialist will gladly sell you a spanking new Camaro right here and now. All you need to sign-up for the already growing queue is a fair swag of solvency in hand, and the patience to perhaps wait some weeks for your very own Camaro to be readied.

Before that happens, there are decisions to be made because the Camaro is a model range, not just a one-horse brand.

Fittingly, the most muscular version dominates. Known as the 2SS, the 6-speed manual, 318kW 6.2-litre V8 is nominally priced from $135,000, largely dependent on how the Aussie dollar's travelling relative to the US greenback.

In the same price ballpark, the 1SS edition has 6-speed autotrans and a slightly less powerful (yet technically more sophisticated) take on the V8 adrenalin pump under the bonnet.

Also available, albeit only on specific request, are the base model LS 3.6-litre V6 priced from $99,000 and the more fully specced LT with its bottom line starting from $110,000.

Appetite whetted? You're not alone. Check back later this week for our first drive impressions plus the story behind this born-again iconic American ponycar and the enterprise that's brought the RHD Camaro to life down under.
