Chevrolet’s all-new 2016 Camaro convertible has been leaked two days ahead of its official launch.
Images of the new Ford Mustang rival surfaced late last night on www.camaro6.com just hours after an official video tease by GM showed a Camaro driver lowering the roof.
GM's newest rival for the Mustang convertible was supposed be officially launched on late Wednesday evening our time, but camaro6.com said images of the new convertible appeared on GM’s own website by accident and promptly screen-grabbed them before Chevrolet realised its mistake.
Sadly for us GM has already ruled out officially importing the new Camaro to Australia since it says it will not engineer its new coupe and convertible for right-hand drive “at this stage in the program”.
The reason for the lack of right-hand drive Camaros is GM did not forecast enough volume from markets like Japan, Australia, South Africa and the UK.
This, despite Ford dealers reporting that they are holding "thousands" of confirmed orders for the right-hand drive Mustang coupe and convertible variants that will arrive Down Under in December.
The cheapest Mustang will be a turbocharged four-cylinder coupe, priced from just under $45,000.
Despite the lack of a business case within GM, the Walkinshaw group is known to be exploring the business case for a RHD Camaro converted at HSV's Melbourne base or even alongside GM's Lansing factory in Michigan.
If the plan comes to fruition, it would be Walkinshaw's second factory-backed RHD conversion deal following a similar arrangement that will see it produce heavy-duty Dodge RAM pick-up trucks in Melbourne from September.
More information on the Camaro convertible will follow after its official reveal this week.
