The all-electric 2022 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck will be revealed on January 5, 2022, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
Specific details are still to be confirmed, such as towing capacities, motor configurations and power output, but Chevrolet has confirmed the EV will have an advanced four-wheel steering system for tight turns and estimates a range of “more than 400 miles on a full charge” (644km).
Crucially, that figure outdistances the claimed driving range of the Ford F-150 Lightning, which can run for 230-300 miles (370-480km) between recharging.
In the latest teaser released overnight, Chevrolet has previewed the new Silverado EV’s glass roof – the first of its kind on a full-size GM pick-up truck – which is claimed to be segment-leading with “expansive visibility, increased headroom and an enhanced experience of spaciousness for both front and rear passengers”.
The US car-maker has confirmed its first full-electric dual-cab ute will be based on the same Ultium EV platform architecture as the reborn circa-$160,000 Hummer EV, which belts out an impressive 746kW with the top-spec triple-motor powertrain.
If it does get the full trio of motors, it could be blisteringly fast, with a 0-100km/h in around 3.0 seconds.
GM has confirmed the Chevrolet Silverado EV will be offered in fleet and retail versions, together with a host of optional extras and accessories.
It’s not yet clear whether the bow-tie brand’s EV truck will be offered Down Under, with a spokesperson General Motors Speciality Vehicles (GMSV) saying only that “The Silverado EV is another vehicle in the General Motors line-up that demonstrates our vision of an all-electric future, however GMSV is not making announcements about the new model at this stage”.
But as GMSV continues to expand its Silverado range in Australia and New Zealand, with a locally-tuned supercharged V8 pick-up on its way, along with heavier-duty Silverado HD models, the EV version hasn’t been ruled out either.
The zero-emissions Silverado will be built at GM’s all-new multi-billion-dollar EV-only ‘Factory Zero’ plant in Detroit.
Reuters previously reported a manufacturing start date of late in 2022 for the important new pick-up.
