Anyone who thought the SS nameplate was consigned to the pages of General Motors history – and the rump of the last remaining Holden Commodore SS muscle cars still on our roads – will be pleasantly surprised to learn that the iconic moniker is set to make a return.
But this time it’s being attached to the back of an electric vehicle.
The revelation came overnight when GM released a 20-second teaser video of its new 2024 Chevrolet Blazer SS – a high-performance, all-electric large SUV that will make its global debut later this year before entering the US market in the second or third quarter of 2023.
Little is known about the Blazer SS, with the teaser clip only revealing a front wing-mounted charging port and some sporty-looking alloy wheels adorned with red SS badging.
However, it’s expected to be underpinned by GM’s new Ultium battery platform which promises huge driving ranges, stark performance and ultra-fast charging, in addition to being almost infinitely scalable.
Combustion-engined versions of the Chevrolet Blazer were at one stage earmarked to come Down Under wearing Holden badges, slotting in between the mid-size Equinox and full-size Acadia, but the program was killed off following Holden’s demise in 2020.
There is no word yet on whether the Blazer SS will be built in right-hand drive, which could open the door for General Motors Speciality Vehicles (GMSV) to bring the SS nameplate back to Australia given its rich heritage here and the car-maker’s performance focus with models such as the Chevrolet Corvette.
A smaller Chevrolet Equinox EV will also be launched in the US next year with a clear focus on the budget end of the EV market.
