Chevrolet Suburban is the first car to get a star on the Hollywood walk of fame
Believe it or not, the American SUV has starred in more than 1,750 films and TV shows since 1952.The Chevrolet Suburban has become the first vehicle to receive the Award of Excellence star at Hollywood & Highland. The star was unveiled at a ceremony on the famed Hollywood Boulevard, with the award recognising Suburban for its 67-year career in Hollywood film and television. The Suburban joins other Hollywood mainstays like Snoopy, Nicole Kidman and Matt Damon.
"For six decades the Chevrolet Suburban has been Hollywood’s longest-working actor," said Rana Ghadban, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
"Appearing in classic feature films and on must-see television shows, the Suburban is a well-established industry mainstay. With the Chevrolet Tahoe also making an impact in movies and on television, it’s impressive to have both vehicles now join an illustrious group of actors and characters that are forever known as Hollywood legends."
The vehicle has appeared most frequently as part of a police squad or motorcade but at the height of the vehicles mainstream American popularity, it appeared as an extra across many projects. It has appeared in films such as Suicide Squad, Sixteen Candles and Fast & Furious. On TV it has appeared in shows such as Veep, Hawaii Five-0 and The A-Team and in a music video for Chance The Rapper.
"There’s really nothing else like the Chevrolet Suburban in this business, for two reasons,” said Dennis McCarthy, Hollywood picture car coordinator.
"First, it’s one of the most versatile vehicles in the business, able to fit with any type of character. Second, it can help instantly give a scene added importance. When a convoy of black Suburbans appears on screen, you know that’s not the time to leave your seat to buy popcorn."
The Chevrolet Suburban made its Hollywood debut back in 1952, and has now appeared in at least one TV series every year since 1956, and at least one film every year since 1960. We feel other cars worthy of their own star on the walk of fame should be the Aston Martin DB5 and the Ford Mustang.
The Suburban was sold in Australia badged as a Holden between 1997 and 2001 but under 1000 vehicles were actually sold.
