Chevrolet is secretly readying a ZL1 version of its fifth-generation Camaro convertible, according to new reports.
US mag Automobile magazine says it’s spotted the hugely powerful convertible in the wild during shakedown winter testing and claims the most powerful four-door convertible in GM’s history has already been green lit for production.
A large rear wing, deeper air intake and front splitter, plus a large wheel and brake package were the dead giveaways - and all are shared with the full-fat ZL1 coupe.
Under the bonnet the fastest droptop Camaro ZL1 has been tipped to share the same LT4 6.2-litre supercharged V8 that’s used in the Cadillac CTS-V and the Corvette Z06.
Expect it to produce at least 485kW/880Nm (up from the old car’s 433kW/754Nm). This should give the four-seater convertible astonishing levels of performance with a potential 0-100km/h time of under four-seconds with a top speed in excess of 300km/h.
Both the Camaro ZL1 coupe and convertible are expected to be unveiled January 11 at the Detroit motor show.
Sadly it’s unlikely we’ll ever see the ZL1 or even the regular Camaro Down Under. Both the big Ford Mustang-rivalling coupe and convertible have been ruled out for right-hand drive production.
