Volkswagen has released first images of the Tiguan X, a sportier four-door 'coupe' version of the popular mid-size SUV created to rival models like the BMW X4.
Based on the latest facelifted version of the second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan due on sale in 2021, the new Tiguan X is more closely related to the long-wheelbase Tiguan Allspace seven-seater rather than the regular five-seat version, measuring in at 4770mm long.
Volkswagen reportedly has no plans to release the Tiguan X in markets outside China, for which the sportier SUV was specifically designed, but that could change if there's significant demand.
Under the bonnet, the Volkswagen Tiguan X comes with just one 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, combined with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Two power outputs are offered, however: the entry-level Tiguan X with 137kW and a flagship version that pumps out 164kW.
If it was ever offered in Australia, the Tiguan X would likely be positioned as a cheaper alternative to the smaller Audi Q3 Sportback, priced significantly lower than the $49,900 starting price for the cheapest Q3 Sportback 35 TFSI.
