Chinese eyes on F1
Geely steps onto formula car ladder with F4 engine supply contractCould a Chinese engine supplier one day power F1 cars? That's the question prompted by this week following the announcement by Chinese brand and Volvo Cars owner, Geely, that it would supply engines to the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) Formula 4 race category.
The 2.0L naturally aspirated engines will be supplied for use in the new feeder formula globally. The decision makes Geely just one of four homologated engine manufacturers for the formula and the only Asian brand represented.
Geely's involvement will be via its motorsports partner Narcar.
The base engine is currently used in Geely's GX7 SUV and Emgrand EC8 sedan. The racing version will debut in the Chinese Formula 4 from 2015 onwards.
China will be one of the first countries to introduce Formula 4, which in the long run is designed to replace Formula Ford.
Geely says Narcar is taking the lead in organising the Chinese race series and will also offering the Geely supplied engines to other global Formula 4 national race series as "a highly competitive engine solution".
