CES 2017: Chrysler Portal Concept unveiled

US car-maker reveals pure-electric people mover that's been created for millennials

Chrysler has pulled the drapes off an all-new concept at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas late last night.

Called the Chrysler Portal Concept, the US car maker claims its futuristic pure-electric people mover has been "created by millennials for millennials".

Featuring front and rear sliding doors, the Portal concept gets a light, spacious and airy cabin that has a minimalist interior with a slim dash and huge touchscreen infotainment screen.

Inside, the Portal's interior has been created to be as flexible as possible with all four seats able to be removed or fold flat when needed.

Under the floor lies a powerful 100kWh lithium ion battery that's claimed to provide for a range of more than 400km.

Thanks to a powerful 350kW fast charger, Chrysler says a 20-minute charge of a flat battery will provide for a range of almost 250km/h.

Unlike the dual motors used by Tesla, the Portal concept makes do with a single front-mounted motor that drives the front wheels.

A lack of a conventional steering wheel also indicates the Portal Concept comes with a self-driving capability, taking over from its human driver on the highway.

The Portal also packs new technology that allows it to talk to both other vehicles and local infrastructure.

Other tech new to the people mover concept include facial recognition that sees the interior customise automatically to the preferences of the driver once the car recognises them.

Finally, an internal wireless network allows all occupants to share music, videos and social media updates on the move. The same tech can also pay for your drive-in meal too or parking, all without a visit to your wallet.

With the decline of popularity of people movers globally it's very unlikely the Portal Concept will ever see the light of day.
