The sleek new 2022 Citroen C5 X has entered Aussie showrooms priced from $57,670 plus on-road costs and fitted with a heap of brand-first safety features.
Going up against other niche crossover SUVs like the CUPRA Formentor and arguably the Haval H6 GT, the C5 X is being offered Down Under in just one highly-specified ‘Shine’ variant powered exclusively by a 133kW/250Nm 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine.
Drive is shipped to the front wheels only via an eight-speed automatic transmission and Citroen claims the powertrain consumes 6.0L/100km on the combined NEDC cycle and emits 137g/km of CO2.
Bury the right foot and Citroen says the coupe-esque C5 X – which joins the C3 Shine hatch ($32,267 plus ORCs), C4 Shine small SUV ($39,990) and C5 Aircross Shine medium SUV ($52,300) as Citroen Australia’s new flagship – will hit 100km/h in a respectable 8.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 230km/h.
The swoopy body, sophisticated bumpers and ‘diamond cut’ 19-inch alloy wheels allude to a loaded interior and equipment list, as you’d expect of a mid-size SUV priced at almost $60,000.
Occupants are greeted by a sea of black leather, a 12-inch infotainment screen, 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display, flat-bottom steering wheel and a layered dash design emphasised by contrasting wood-effect trim.
That widescreen infotainment system houses satellite-navigation, wireless smartphone mirroring, natural voice recognition, Bluetooth connectivity and dual-zone climate control interface.
Other standard equipment highlights include power-adjustable front seats with memory function for the driver, an electric sunroof, comfort access, paddle shifters, powered tailgate, ambient lighting, sports pedals, e-toggle gear selector, automatic LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers.
‘Intelligent’ cruise control – a first for any Citroen – is also included, along with other brand-firsts like rear cross traffic alert, long-range blind spot monitoring and active lane positioning.
Other standard headline safety features include autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, multi-collision braking, tyre pressure monitoring, driver attention alert, active lane keep assist, extended traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree camera and front, rear and side cameras.
Despite only being offered here in one guise, Citroen Australia managing director Kate Gillis said the C5 X will “further expand” the brand’s local sales growth.
“This latest addition to our Australian range not only bolsters our model line-up but also provides a unique and compelling product offering with the return to the touring segment,” she said.
“C5 X truly underscores the brand’s design DNA and will appeal to those discerning Australian drivers keen to travel in absolute comfort and style.
“It also gives us the opportunity to engage with both new and existing Citroen audiences.”
The C5 X is covered by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty along with five years of roadside assistance, and you can read our launch review here.
